History of Southside Baptist Church
God has been very faithful to Southside Baptist Church from the beginning, and since that is His nature, we have high hopes for the future! Following is a brief history of our church to date.
July 8, 1988 a group of people met to discuss the possibility of beginning a new church in Lufkin- 22 people met to worship on July 10
- Mike Curry was called as Pastor
- 1st building was located at Hwy 94 and the loop
- September 21, 1988 - Church reached a membership of 51 and charter membership status was closed
- November 1988 - Church voted to lease with option to purchase Bethel Church of the Nazarene
April 5, 1989 - Southside agreed to purchase 6.8 acres on Tulane Dr. at a cost of $50,000. - June 7, 1989 - Church voted to build Worship Center Tulane Dr.
- Met in the current worship center for the first time August 12, 1990.
- October 7, 1992 - The Pastor's position becomes a bi-vocational position.
- May 5, 1993 - Clint Franks licensed to the Gospel Ministry
- October 17, 1993 - Mike Curry submits his resignation effective October 31, 1993.
- December 22, 1993 - Raymond Dunkin was called as Interim Pastor.
- June 24, 1994 - Pastor Jeff Robinson begins.
August 13, 1997 - Church voted to build on to existing fellowship hall.- April 18, 1999 - Church voted to build 14,400 ft2 education and office building.
- May 12, 1999 - Church votes to create a full-time Minister of Education and Youth position.
- October 13, 1999 - Kenny Mayo licensed to the Gospel Ministry
- November 17, 1999 - Laura Beth Yates certified to the ministry
